Fifth Graders Visit Hagley Museum

Fifth grade students from AGI visited the Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware to learn about 19th century life and a local 19th century business that employed hundreds of workers.  Students visited the gunpowder mills and learned how water powered the machinery, baked biscuits in a 19th century kitchen, played games and musical instruments that would have entertained 19th century families, and made crafts.

Student Choice Book Awards

As part of our PTA Arthor in Residence Program students in all grade levels were invited to suggest interesting and engaging book titles to the school’s Literacy Committee. This Student Choice book campaign was an extremely popular idea among the students and we were able to purchase 160 new titles for our library.  Our goals were to build enthusiasm for independent reading time, recognize student input and choices and to improve our book selection in the library.

Special thanks to our Literacy Committee and Mrs. Eileen Sparling, our PTA chair person for the Author in Residence program, for her help and support on this project!

Jump Rope for Heart

On Thursday and Friday, April 12 and 13, 2012, all students in the Avon Grove Intermediate School participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event.  Many of the participants also chose to raise money, and, in total, we raised over $8,100 to benefit the American Heart Association.

Thanks to everyone who participated and/or donated money to this worthy cause.

Muffins for Moms 2012

This year's PTA Muffins for Moms was hugely popular.  Even though it has been that way every year, we noticed far more moms attending this year.  It is great that parents could take the time to come in early to share a moment with their children.  Special thanks goes to Mrs. Kelly Messikomer for her work as the PTA repsresentative that chaired the event.

Spirit Committee Helps Encourage Everyone for PSSA Efforts

Each house has spirit committee  members from our 6th grade homerooms.  Mrs. Greenberg, our 6th grade counselor, works with the spirit committees from time to time when we see a way they can encourage the school community.  Most recently they took on the task of making signs to motivate everyone for this year's PSSA efforts.  The signs were great and served as constant reminders for each student that "We ARE ready for the PSSA"!  Thanks Spirit committee members and Mrs. Greenberg!
